The Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor

The initial publication of the Medal of Honor book in 2003 was on the New York Times Best-Seller list. Combined sales for all editions are in excess of 350,000.

On the 150th Anniversary of the Medal of Honor, December 21, 2011, the NPR Morning Edition broadcast featured a story of two Medal of Honor recipients. In the story, and on the NPR website, the Medal of Honor book was mentioned and several portraits from the book were displayed on the website.

Brian Williams, former managing editor/anchor of NBC Nightly News, often incorporated Del Calzo’s portraits in each on-air tribute to a newly deceased Medal of Honor recipient.

Brian Williams presented a recipient-signed copy of the Medal of Honor book to David Letterman on the Late Show in October 2011.

Brian Williams designated the MOH book as "the book he recommends above all others" in a feature article in the September 2010 issue of "O," The Oprah Magazine.

Brian Williams, former NBC Nightly News anchor, highlighted the book and portraits for 110 days on his blog.

In November 2010 on MSNBC.com, the MOH images were showcased throughout the day in conjunction with the award by the President to SSG Salvatore A. Giunta.

Nick Del Calzo contributed a feature about the “behind the scenes” stories of photographing a number of recipients in a special magazine edition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Medal of Honor in 2011.

In 2010, The Center for American Values in Pueblo, CO, acquired a complete MOH Collection portfolio as a permanent exhibition in the Center. The images were showcased as part of the official opening ceremony event and received prominent coverage.

As part of the inaugural event for Medal of Honor Day March 25, 2008, the Collection was displayed in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building in the nation’s capitol.

The Collection was on display in conjunction with the 2008 Medal of Honor Convention in Denver and was viewed by several hundred thousand visitors during a five-week exhibition at a premier location. (Click here to view exhibition visitors' comments)

In October 2008, Pritzker Military Library in Chicago displayed the Collection and subsequently featured Nick Del Calzo as part of the Library’s Medal of Honor video series.

His work on the Medal of Honor received critical acclaim by American PHOTO Magazine (Nov/Dec 2004), noting "Del Calzo's photographs . . . are both moving and deeply respectful."

USO’s "On Patrol" magazine featured one of the MOH portraits on the Fall 2010 cover.

The MOH Collection was displayed under the wings of Air Force One at the Reagan Presidential Library in February 2008.

One of the recipient’s portraits is on permanent display in the newly renovated Reagan Presidential Library, Simi Valley, CA.

November 2004: The Colorado Center for the Book, the state affiliate of the Library of Congress, chose the Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty as that year's book award selection.

November 2004: The Smithsonian Institution incorporated several images from Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty in a new exhibition about the Congressional Medal of Honor in the National Museum of American History. The exhibit officially opened Veterans Day, November 11, 2004.

Medal of Honor portraits featured in the new book were showcased in Hasselblad USA's gallery at PhotoPlus Expo from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, 2003. The 15 portraits remained with the Hasselblad gallery as it traveled to other photography shows throughout the country.

Photovision Magazine published an eight-page cover story on Medal of Honor book in its November/December 2003 issue.
